About Us

An action group established by friends living in Earlsfield in response to the refugee crisis, Just Shelter provides direct aid to asylum seekers locally in the UK and in Northern France.

We host events for local asylum seekers and refugees in Earlsfield. We also organise frequent trips to Calais and Dunkirk in Northern France delivering essential items to refugees as well as working with various partners on the ground.

Our vital work relies on a dedicated team of volunteers, continued donations and fundraising.

Our Beginnings

Just Shelter was founded by local parents in Earlsfield after the tragic death of 2 year-old Alan Kurdi made the headlines in 2015.

The aim was simple, bringing justice and shelter to some of the people forced to leave their homes around the world.

Our mission has evolved since then, expanding to serve the community of refugees living in the Earlsfield — Wandsworth area as well as further away in northern France.

Our Objectives

  1. Community Aid

We regularly deliver direct aid and donations from the residents of Wandsworth to benefit our local community of refugees and those in Calais. We are lucky to partner with brilliant charities both here and abroad to help those in need.

Our local partners:

Our partners abroad:

To date, we have made more than 35 trips to the Calais/Dunkirk area of France.  We’re accompanied by an amazing group of volunteers many of whom have made multiple trips to help.

2. Community Outreach

We have fostered a network of local partnerships with groups and individuals working to support refugees and asylum seekers.

Our local networks include:

  • Faith groups

  • Schools

  • Local residents

  • Local charities / community groups working to support refugees and asylum seekers

By reaching out to the wider community we have been able to build our network of volunteers to support our work and spread our message, priming our community to be a welcoming neighbourhood for refugees and asylum seekers.

We also run regular assemblies in schools and provide talks to local groups at their request, as well as running our ‘Just’ initiatives. To find out more about these head to the ‘What We Do’ page.

3. Community Awareness

We provide space within the community to communicate our vision so locals can support the work we do for refugees.

This enables us to raise awareness locally, to fundraise and to gather further support for refugees both locally and abroad.
