What We Do
Our initial focus was on providing aid to those in Northern France but with the challenges of the Covid pandemic and the ever growing number of asylum seekers being housed in temporary accommodation locally, we increasingly help those in and around Earlsfield.
Just Supper
Every few months, Home Community Cafe cook up a storm and we host a joint supper club to raise funds for our cause. This very popular event enables us to host a second meal, using the ‘pay it forward’ scheme, for those who have journeyed. Funds raised enable us to host our Just Sharing dining events.
Just Sharing
We host a community meal with guests from temporary Home Office accommodation together with local groups of friends that have travelled far and our community members. This evening of friendship, sharing stories and music is a highlight in our calendar.
Just Supper at Home
A local host opens their home to guests from local Home Office hotels and invite them to cook some of their favourite dishes for the benefit of friends and to raise funds for our ongoing work to support local refugees. For those that are restricted to their hotel rooms for months at a time, with no choice of food, it is a welcome opportunity for them to cook and educate others on their preferred cuisine and culture.
Just Teachers
Our team of experienced teachers from Earlsfield travel to local hotels and Northern France with Just Shelter to deliver ‘school’ sessions to displaced children. We work with children in small groups or one-to-one. Our pupils are always very keen to learn!
Just Awareness
We are part of a larger group of local organisations and together we raise awareness of the issues asylum seekers face in our Borough. We were successful during the last local Council elections in having all but one of the main parties include a commitment to refugees in their manifesto. Wandsworth is now on its way to becoming a Borough of Sanctuary and we continue to work with the Council to ensure the specific challenges and needs of our asylum seekers and refugees are considered.
